Folks 👏
When I read the quote above, I was like ,“YES.” I feel like a lot of others would agree with this as well. Since when has poetry ever not been obscure?
I always believed that I disliked poetry. Ever since I tried for that one poetry competition in 9th grade and utterly failed… it’s safe to say that poetry had gotten on my bad side. And the reason for my dislike was how hard they were. All the figurative language coupled in with the beautiful diction—as I read those seemingly English words to myself, I found myself thinking, what the heck am I reading?
The obscurity of poetry is what I hated. Like, just say what you mean, please and thank you! I don’t need to go through a routine of mind numbing mental gymnastics just to gather, oh, this poet probably was talking about their love for pencils, or something.
Or at least… that’s what I thought (no, I’m not talking about the pencil loving poet).
When we were asked to write our first WNB of the new semester, I reflected on my experience with poetry and I was able to understand that the obscurity was what I didn’t like. But now that I think about it, obscurity is the exact reason that I like poetry.
I like that poetry is obscure. What this accomplishes is having multiple interpretations. It is a reflection of reality, because, yes, truly, there is no one answer to anything. Depending on what you believe in, your answer could be far different from mine. That doesn’t make your answer any wrong than mine. In life, there simply are no wrong answers. There are multiple paths to achieve one goal, and poetry is one such method to show this complexity of life. One simple poem could have an infinite amount of interpretations. And this doesn’t make any of the interpretations wrong, it just also means that there are no right interpretations. After all, we only think that we know what the poet wants to say, there’s no knowing for sure.
That’s all I have to say for now. Hope you enjoyed your time at Gargi Town.
